As a non-profit 501(c)3 organization, the Friends of the Meriden Public Library provides a variety of services to the citizens of Meriden in support of the free public library system. Some of the programs and services of the Friends include:
Summer Children’s Programs
The Friends fund a variety of specially created summer library programs for children that help to promote literacy and library outreach to children in every age group.
Books for Babies
In conjunction with MidState Medical Center, the Friends send a book and library card home with each newborn delivered at the Meriden-based hospital. This program ensures that all new parents know about the literacy programs available to them through the library.
Located at the Meriden Public Library, the Friends of the Library Bookstore features quality used books available for sale at discounted prices.
The Friends of the Meriden Public Library also assists the City of Meriden, in a pinch, with completion of maintenance projects. Through funding as well as manual labor, we help the City to complete a variety of upkeep projects throughout the Library including painting, carpet installation and landscaping upgrades.
The Friends of the Meriden Public Library was founded in 1984 by a group of individuals seeking to support the efforts and offerings of the Meriden Public Library through privately organized fund-raising endeavors. Over the years, the Friends have grown in both number of members and scope of funding efforts. Today, the Friends of the Meriden Public Library boasts a new location for its bookstore with a large selection of gently used books. The Friends also hosts a variety of cultural and educational events as well as a variety of literacy-based programs.
