Purpose of Meeting
The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) is hosting a construction open house on Tuesday, May 28, 2024, at 5:00 p.m. regarding upcoming construction activities at the Meriden Public Library at 105 Miller St in Meriden.
The construction open house will allow the public and local community the opportunity to meet the project construction team, view construction plans and schedule, and ask questions regarding the construction projects. The open house will be open from 5:00-6:00 p.m., followed by a presentation beginning at 6:00 p.m. and question-and-answer (Q&A) session. “This project will address traffic operational and safety concerns associated with capacity, congestion, and weaving between I-91, I-691, and Route 15 in Meriden,” said Connecticut Department of Transportation Project Engineer Mohamad Alramahi. “We encourage the surrounding community and traveling public to attend this meeting to meet the CTDOT construction team and ask questions about the design and construction plans.”
The proposed improvements will occur in three phases, with Phases 1 and 2 currently in construction.
Phase 1 will realign and widen ramp from I-691 eastbound to I-91 northbound (at Exit 1A old Exit 11) to two lanes to meet traffic demand; replace a bridge due to ramp realignment and widening; provide one additional lane on I-91 northbound to relieve congestion caused by a steep uphill grade; and add a lane to the bridge carrying I-91 NB over Baldwin Avenue.
Phase 2 will create a new two-lane exit ramp from Route 15 northbound to I-91 northbound to reduce traffic congestion on the Exit 68 ramp; close the existing Exit 17 ramp from I-91 northbound to Route 15 northbound and re-route traffic to Exit 16 to provide a two-lane exit ramp with a right-side traffic merge onto Route 15 northbound; widen the existing Exit 68W ramp from Route 15 northbound to I-691 westbound to two lanes; and reconfigure acceleration and deceleration lanes to provide adequate traffic weaving distances.
