Event Details

Mark Twain described Adventures of Huckleberry Finn as “a book of mine where a sound heart and a deformed conscience come into collision and conscience suffers defeat.” “How to Reform a Conscience,” a 75-minute discussion led by Erin Bartram, Ph.D., of the Mark Twain House & Museum, discusses how Twain came to recognize the way his own conscience was “deformed” with regard to racism and white supremacy, and explores the ways he successfully – and not so successfully – worked to reform it. Dr. Bartram will examine writings, from both Mark Twain and his contemporaries, about these timely topics that unfortunately still exist today. You do not need to have read the book to participate in the discussion and learn from this program!
