Native American Artifact Collections and Repatriation
In 1990, the American Congress passed the Native American Graves and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA), requiring government museums, universities, and other agencies receiving federal funds and having Native American artifacts or human remains in their collections to inventory their holdings and notify tribes that have cultural affiliation to those items and remains for possible repatriation.
While NAGPRA has been criticized and can be complicated, it has led to dialogue and partnerships between museums and the Native American community.
The former state archaeologist will discuss these issues and present examples of repatriation from across the country.
Presenter: Nicholas Bellantoni, Ph.D., emeritus Connecticut State Archaeologist
