Event Details
The Wangunks are the indigenous people of Middletown, and their homelands ranged from Saukiog (Hartford) to Haddam and beyond. They invited the English to settle with them at Saukiog, and for generations had sachems (chiefs) and sunk squaws (elder women) in their many villages along the Connecticut river.
Katherine Hermes has reconstructed many Wangunk genealogies from the 17th to the 19th century and has written about their contributions to the legal history of Connecticut and Rhode Island. She will talk about their family life, society and culture.
